Instagram is actually cropping your story

I did my first test of Instagram story dimensions with Huawei Nexus 6P. As a result, I found out that ca 63 pixels from the top and the bottom of the image were cropped. But what about the other phones and screens?

Instagram is also cutting sides

My test with Nexus 6P resulted only with cropped top and bottom. But that was not the end of the story. After I asked some of my friends to take a screenshot of my test story I noticed that the sides are also being cropped.

Different screens show different results

The difference is not that big but one thing is sure - you need to keep in mind that there is a space you need to consider being cut or cropped. As you can see from the image below.

The yellow part on the image is the area that was cut off from the original image that I posted on my Instagram account.

Leave space just in case

My original image had the recommended dimensions of 1080 x 1920 pixels. It is still suggested to create your content on a canvas that is the size of a Full HD portrait but just make sure to leave space for the cuts.

The avatar and the message box

In addition to the cropping, you should keep an eye on the avatar on top-left of the image and message box on the bottom of the content. This is something that is added later by Instagram. So you need to consider that content on these areas will be shaded or covered.
